In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, opulent lodges were built for the affluent as their family retreat. These private estates were constructed in the great camp style which artfully blends logs, native stone and rustic wood work. On the shores of prestigious Upper Saranac Lake, nestled amongst the trees on 17 acres of Adirondack woodlands is Land’s End.
Mrs. Donald P. Dupont-Ross, in 1931, decided that Land’s End was the place It was not only beautiful but the lake with it gradual descending bottom made it an ideal swimming area, thus the perfect setting for their family vacation. The 15,000 square foot estate took over five years to construct. The Boathouse was the first phase beginning in 1932. Two years later, the Ross family spent their first night in the main house. The Ross family had been at Land’s End for four years when they built a second house, which later became the caretaker’s home.
Over time many things change but the essence of this magical place is indistinguishable. Land’s End offers something so intense yet so diffuse that it evades description. |
